The chicken coop is now automated. This was the final group project for a Microcontroller class, taught by Ross Johnson, PhD. Three home-school students in grades 12, 9, and 7 learned how to use the Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers. Projects throughout the full-year course included connecting various hardware sensors and actuators as well as programming in C++ and Python. The final group project was selected and executed by the team. The customer (their mother) was extremely satisfied, with the first fully-automated door opening successfully demonstrated at 11:00am on Mother's Day, 2020.
